The timeline for a Trump-Putin summit has evaporated. A US official confirmed Tuesday that “no plans” exist for a meeting in the “immediate future,” despite President Trump’s recent claims.
Trump had announced on social media last week, after a call with Putin, that a Budapest summit was just two weeks away.
The Kremlin’s spokesperson backed the new, slower timeline, stating there is “no precise timeframe” for a summit.
A “productive” call did take place on Monday between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to discuss the potential meeting.
However, the anonymous US official said a follow-up in-person meeting between them was “not necessary,” signaling a halt to the plans.
