Netanyahu Criticized After Labeling UK as ‘Islamic Republic of Britain’

by admin477351

In a controversial statement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has referred to the United Kingdom as the “Islamic republic of Britain” and claimed it could become the “first Islamic republic to get a nuclear weapon.” These comments, made during a podcast interview on Israel’s army radio, have sparked criticism from British officials and Netanyahu’s political adversaries in Israel. The prime minister’s remarks came as he was discussing Britain’s evolving political scene, following praise for positive media coverage of Israel by journalist Randolph Churchill, the son of former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill.

Netanyahu’s comments have been denounced for perpetuating Islamophobic stereotypes concerning Britain’s Muslim community. It is worth noting that Pakistan, officially known as the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, has been a nuclear-armed state since the 1990s. The strained relations between Britain and Israel have been further tested by Israel’s military actions in Gaza, coupled with growing criticism from the UK government regarding Israeli policies.

In response to these tensions, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has indicated that the UK may increase pressure on Israel, potentially considering further sanctions and trade restrictions involving illegal settlements. Netanyahu’s remarks have also been met with disapproval from Israeli opposition figure Avi Dabush, who accused the prime minister of harming relations with a key international ally at a time when Israel is facing increasing diplomatic isolation.

The British Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office labeled Netanyahu’s remarks as “completely unacceptable” and confirmed that the issue has been addressed with the Israeli government. This incident occurs amid rising tensions between Israel and several Western allies over the ongoing conflict in Gaza, alongside intensifying debates in Britain concerning Islamophobia and anti-Muslim rhetoric.
