Japan and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have pledged $3 million to promote environmentally sustainable mining practices in Kazakhstan’s rare metals and rare earth minerals sector. This initiative, launched on October 30, aims to fortify environmental regulations and introduce advanced green technologies and digital monitoring systems.

The project will be executed by the UNDP in collaboration with Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Industry and Construction, with financial backing from Japan. As Kazakhstan identifies over 120 deposits of rare metals and rare earth minerals across the nation, the initiative seeks to ensure that mining operations meet international environmental standards amid rising global demand for these critical resources.

The focus will be on early identification of environmental risks, pollution prevention, and strengthening monitoring systems before large-scale mining operations commence. The Ministry of Industry and Construction in Kazakhstan has expressed that this partnership will facilitate the integration of modern green technologies and international environmental standards into the country’s mineral production sector.

Japan has reiterated its commitment to the initiative, viewing it as part of its broader strategy to support green development and enhance regional resilience in Central Asia. The collaboration between these entities aims to promote responsible mining practices, protect local communities, and safeguard ecosystems, while enabling Kazakhstan to capitalize on the growing global need for critical minerals.
