A US official stated that the administration is ready to act but has made European participation a non-negotiable condition, effectively forcing the EU to declare its position.
The move is designed to counter the strategic support that Beijing and New Delhi have provided to Moscow, which has frustrated Western efforts to isolate Putin. The US has already acted unilaterally with a 50% tariff on India. Now, it seeks a powerful partner to amplify that pressure.
This test of international resolve is happening as the very policy tool in question is being tested in the US Supreme Court. A ruling against the president’s tariff authority would not only be a domestic defeat but would also undermine America’s credibility in leading such a bold international economic campaign.
