by admin477351

A regional meeting focusing on chemical safety and international cooperation recently convened in Ljubljana, bringing together 18 representatives from Eastern European Member States who are part of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). This two-day event offered a platform for discussing the implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention, exploring national legislation, and sharing best practices and capacity-building programmes. The gathering aimed to address practical challenges and reinforce regional collaboration among the member states.

The agenda included country-specific presentations, an overview of the OPCW’s achievements, and discussions on contemporary issues and obstacles. A significant emphasis was placed on the impact of artificial intelligence and the role of academia in ensuring chemical safety and combating the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. This reflects the ongoing commitment to eliminating chemical weapons and preventing their future use.

Slovenia, a proactive member of the OPCW, has been consistently implementing the Chemical Weapons Convention. The country prohibits the development, production, stockpiling, and use of chemical weapons and mandates their destruction under international supervision. The Slovenian Chemicals Office oversees the implementation of the Convention at the national level, monitoring industrial activities involving strategic chemicals and collaborating with the OPCW for international inspections.

On May 12, Slovenia joined the OPCW Executive Council, the governing body that promotes compliance with the Chemical Weapons Convention. Throughout its two-year term, Slovenia plans to focus on preventing chemical weapons proliferation and enhancing trust and security within the global community. During the meeting in Ljubljana, Boštjan Peršin from the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs highlighted Slovenia’s priorities, including supporting new technologies and promoting the peaceful and safe use of chemistry.

By co-organizing the current Regional Meeting and engaging with the OPCW, Slovenia has reaffirmed its dedication to maintaining high standards of chemical safety, transparency, and the responsible use of chemicals for peaceful purposes. With the Convention being one of the most successful and widely ratified treaties, now encompassing 193 States Parties, Slovenia’s involvement in the Executive Council underscores its commitment to these international objectives.
