Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has unveiled legislative plans aimed at Israelis accused of tarnishing the Israel Defense Forces’ (IDF) reputation abroad. The proposed bills include provisions to potentially revoke the citizenship of those responsible and to increase damages in defamation cases.
Netanyahu’s proposals come in response to a documentary titled “NAZA,” created by filmmakers Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, which claims that Israeli forces used artificial intelligence in military operations that resulted in civilian casualties in Gaza. The Prime Minister also cited opposition politician Yair Golan in connection with these allegations.
President Isaac Herzog expressed skepticism regarding the proposal to revoke citizenship, noting that such a measure is unlikely to succeed. Herzog criticized the documentary’s claims but emphasized that any complaints from soldiers should be addressed through established military procedures rather than new legislation.
Under current Israeli law, the revocation of citizenship is reserved for severe cases, such as acts of terrorism or treason, and requires approval from both governmental authorities and the courts. While the IDF has rejected the documentary’s allegations, asserting that military strike decisions involve human oversight, the controversy has sparked a broader debate in Israel concerning freedom of expression and military accountability.
The filmmakers have defended their work, stating their investigation relies on substantial evidence, including interviews. The proposed bills and the documentary’s allegations have intensified discussions within Israel about how the nation should address controversial claims related to its military operations in Gaza.
