Meta Platforms has swiftly pulled the plug on its Muse Image AI feature, mere days after its introduction, due to a wave of criticism concerning privacy issues and its use of public Instagram content. The recently launched image-generation tool was designed to allow users to create and manipulate AI-generated images by utilizing publicly available photos from Instagram. It was integrated into the broader Meta AI ecosystem, providing users with the ability to edit images through sketches and prompts based on existing photos.
The feature’s debut was met with immediate backlash, primarily because it was automatically enabled for eligible users, sparking concerns over consent and the ethical use of public images in generating AI content. Critics, including the entertainment industry union SAG-AFTRA and several public figures, voiced strong objections, demanding that the feature be retracted. They insisted that users should have been given the choice to opt in before their content was used in such a manner.
In response to the uproar, Meta acknowledged that the Muse Image AI feature fell short of user expectations and confirmed its removal.
