Japan’s Political Scene Jolted by Abrupt Resignation of PM Ishiba

by admin477351

Japan’s political scene was jolted Sunday by the abrupt resignation of Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. The decision, though anticipated by insiders, throws the country into a state of uncertainty and sets in motion a high-stakes race to succeed him.

The resignation is the culmination of a disastrous year for Ishiba. He took office with the hope of stabilizing the LDP but instead presided over two elections that resulted in the loss of the party coalition’s parliamentary majorities, severely undermining his authority.

In his announcement, Ishiba said he was resigning to avoid a “decisive” split in the LDP, acknowledging the deep divisions his leadership had exposed. The move came just a day before his opponents were expected to launch a formal challenge to his position.

With Ishiba out, the LDP’s factions will now battle for control. The choice of a new leader in October will have profound implications for Japan’s approach to everything from economic policy to regional security.
