Iran and the United Arab Emirates are seeking to mend ties and improve relations following a period of heightened tensions in the region, according to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. This announcement came after Pezeshkian’s meeting with Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in New Delhi. The discussions were described as constructive, with both nations agreeing to focus on future cooperation.
This meeting represented the highest-level contact between the two countries since tensions in West Asia intensified, leading to the UAE suspending trade and financial exchanges with Iran. The dialogue underscored a mutual interest in addressing regional and international developments, as well as efforts to de-escalate tensions, promote stability, and encourage peace and development. The discussions were aligned with a recent joint statement by Iran, the UAE, and other BRICS members urging restraint in the ongoing conflict.
Despite previous strains, the UAE continues to hold economic significance for Iran, with Dubai acting as a crucial commercial hub for the Iranian community and facilitating economic activities amid international sanctions. This economic interdependence underscores the importance of maintaining and improving bilateral relations.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump expressed no concerns over a proposed meeting between Iran and Gulf states regarding the strategic Strait of Hormuz. This meeting is scheduled to take place in Oman, even as tensions between Washington and Tehran persist.
