PM Downplays Burnham Challenge Talk as Party Jitters Grow

by admin477351

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has worked to tamp down rumours of a challenge from Andy Burnham, praising the Manchester mayor’s performance and urging Labour colleagues to avoid infighting.

Burnham’s reluctance to completely dismiss leadership ambitions has revived internal debate. His comments coincide with declining polling figures and rising concern about Starmer’s position.

While travelling to the G20 summit, Starmer reflected on their close cooperation during the synagogue attack response. He emphasised that Burnham has been “excellent” in times of crisis.

Starmer warned MPs to stay away from briefings that undermine unity, referencing reports that some believe Wes Streeting is preparing a move. He said the government’s focus must remain on tackling the cost-of-living crisis.

Burnham maintained he has no active challenge in motion but also said he “cannot predict the future.” He continues to promote Manchester’s growth plan and keeps speculation alive.
